Happy Halloween La Catrina
Thursday, October 29th, 2009You probably recognize these skeleton images and just associate them with Halloween. But they are actually over a century old and we can thank one of the first humorists and political satirists of modern art, Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913). A poor Mexican printmaker turned artist, Posada depicted the attitudes of the working class and the social inequities of his time.
One of his most famous works, La Catrina, a skeleton dressed as a wealthy socialite is recognized world-wide. And as famous as his work became, Posada was born poor and he died poor, what a social injustice! Have a Happy Halloween!
